The thermodynamic origin of harmonics

Faller, M.

Abstract
This paper is an original attempt to understand the physical basis of the harmonic overtone series in terms of the parameters and constraints of the Second Law of thermodynamics. The paper will show that using the Second Law with a doubly bound, continuous dissipative source can adequately account for the mathematical patterns associated with these musical ratios. The paper will make the further claim that this discovery of the origins of the harmonic ratios also begins to unravel much of the residue confusion regarding the contradictory arrows of time – that towards order and its contrary towards chaos.
