Computer Simulation Of Cell-Surface Signalling And Control Of Cellular Division And Differentiation

Chris Pudney and Richard Sallie

Abstract
Recent research into the ribonucleoprotein, telomerase, suggests that it might be involved in the storage and transfer of information required to control cell division and differentiation. To assess the viability of such mechanisms, a model of cell-surface information trafficking has been implemented. Each cell has a 160-base RNA sequence. Cell division depends on the similarity between a cell's sequence and those of its neighbours, and the availability of space into which to divide. Cells with high similarity can divide, those with intermediate similarity are static, and those with low similarity eventually die. Cell division replicates a cell into an adjacent available space, and involves transcription of the cell's RNA sequence with a small probability of error. Results of several simulations of this model using different parameter settings are presented and discussed. Many of the cell populations generated resemble biological structures.
