Growing Intelligence

|
| Abstract | |
| What is it about intelligence? Despite a wide variety of approaches, only incremental progress has been made towards large artificial systems that exhibit intelligent behaviour of importance. Despite the appeal of the concept of complex intelligence arising from simple emergent mechanisms, there has been little achieved in this direction. Here, we argue that to progress in this direction we should attempt to emulate the process of maturity of biological systems, in that plasticity of structures is combined with a set of carefully staged learning tasks. While most of the examples draw from experience in researching machines that read large vocabulary handwritten information, there are important implications for other applications. Our methodology is illustrated both by the reading machines and by proposals for visually tracking flexible objects against a natural background. | |
