The GAUDI Project: Design and Development Issues in Constructing an Intelligent Robot

Robert Speer, Brad Curry, David Xiao Zhong,
Wayne Moore and George Bryan

Abstract
This paper presents some design issues involved in the construction of an intelligent robot. Most investigations of robot systems are presented within a constricted framework and not as a holistic system. The GAUDI project is an attempt to address this problem by constructing a complete system that is based on an overall consistent framework. The development of such a system involves the integration of parallel processing mechatronics and aspects of computer science and control systems in the application of neural network systems and other complex systems work.

As well as a discussion of the proposed issues, this paper also presents the current state of development of a prototype system. Early work has progressed in the acquisition of data, its storage and the proposed bipedal motion subsystem.
