The Complexity of Brains: A Biologist's View
Chris U. M. Smith |
|
| Abstract | |
| Anatomical complexity is said to increase during organic evolution. One brain is said to be more complex than another. Neural complexity is said to have something to do with intelligence. But what do we mean by neuro-anatomical complexity? Can we agree on a definition so that meaningful comparisons can be made? This paper reviews some of the approaches adopted and makes an attempt to assess the complexity of brains. It shows how very far we are at present from being able to give a numerical estimate. | |
