Separability of the inseparable: a cognitive furphy in 2-(3)-dimensional psychophysics, nonlinear psychophysics

Gregson, R. A.

Abstract
The separability of parallel sensory inputs is postulated to exist in some linear stochastic models of perception. Such separability does not exist in nonlinear Gamma processes, but compensation can produce an approximation to apparent separation. It is possible that the degree of separability is related to the number of component dimensions in a contrast that differ; this is confounded in metric representations with the orthogonality of the stimulus set, and the p value in the Minkowski metric.
